TODS – THE WIZARDS IN OZCrewkerne-based composite materials engineering specialists W & J Tod Limited (TODS) have welcomed home their last installation team from Australia, after concluding work on the Royal Australian Navy’s sixth, and last, Collins class submarine, which was completed in April 2006. TODS have worked, with the all six vessels, over the past eight years being involved in the design, development, manufacture and installation of special polymeric fairings to aid hydrodynamic flow and reduce the vessels operating noise during underwater operations. On concluding the final phase of the contract, TODS Marine Division Director, Steve Burton said: “It has been a privilege being in a high profile technical working partnership with Buchannan Advanced Composites of Toowoomba and for us both to support the Australian Submarine Corporation in Adelaide. Over the past eight years we have had to undertake and meet a range of challenging engineering criteria. The Australian, and our UK engineers have worked in complete unison throughout the project. We will continue to be involved in maintenance of the hydrodynamic fairings during the lifetime of the vessels.” |
