UK-based W & J Tod Limited (TODS) Highlight their expertise in the design and build of modular Servery Bars and Galleys for today’s rolling stock programmes.

CATERING MODULES (Railway GazetteInternationalfeature)

Transforming design concepts into practical manufacturing solutions is where TODS have achieved a considerable reputation. Company philosophy is to be involved with rolling stock manufacturers at the envelope concept stage to allow for a major input into the detail design, and then build quality modules that are not only aesthetically pleasing, but are also compliant with international Health & Hygiene and Fire Safety regulation.

The latest interactive electronic Catia 3-D Modelling CAD design systems are now used to transfer confidential design and production data between TODS and various international train manufacturers.

TODS have developed their own range of ‘industry approved’ laminated faced aluminium materials, under the name of TODLAM, which are cut and shaped to the contours of the ‘designer’ modules, to incorporate not only the serving bar surfaces, but components such ceiling panels, air-conditioning duct work, flooring, overhead lockers or under-counter storage cupboards and bins. Modules invariably incorporate all the plumbing, electrical and refrigeration circuitry to integrate with specified kitchen and bar equipment. Units are fully fabricated and factory tested before being shipped complete and ready for, plug-in, installation on carriage assembly lines.

Typically, TODS are represented at the key European centre in Brugge, and are currently in production with Catering Modules for UK Midland Mainline and Hull Train programmes, following recent successful completion of Bar Servery modules for Virgin Cross Country trains.

Tom Hitchings, W & J Tod Limited, Director, Mass Transit Business says: “From a restricted working space the Servery Bar is a vital element for on-board efficiency. Not only must it have eye-catching appeal, but also for the operators it is a perceived profit centre, and must be capable of delivering the best customer service. Sophisticated compact modules are now essential, and their design must also address the practical problems of building and maintaining modern railway carriages where components need to be lightweight, yet provide strength and safety.”
