ON THE MARK WITH THE LYNX MK9 UPGRADE PROGRAMME

Specialist expertise in composite materials has allowed Tods Aerospace to keep fully in-step with the rapid response programme to modify and upgrade Lynx Mk9 helicopters to support British troops in Afghanistan. Tods Aerospace has set aside a team to build a number of special airframe components to enable AgustaWestland to meet their critical deadlines with the MoD.

The up-rated helicopters, now being delivered into ‘theatre’ on schedule, are now fitted with a series of new composite lightweight airframe structures and fairings, many designed by Tods Aerospace, as part of the modification programme, which will improve the Mk9’s capabilities in arduous operational conditions.

Simon Finch, CEO Tods Aerospace, said: “When the Urgent Operational Requirement (UOR) call from the military was made we were already embedded with AgustaWestland on the design and production of composite structures with the AW159 programme. However, the upgrade of the Lynx Mk9 to meet the specific operational criteria for Afghanistan had a range of additional engineering and delivery schedule challenges.”
