MAKING A DARING BOW – FROM TODS!Just weeks after the high profile shipyard launch of the Royal Navy’s latest Type 45 HMS Daring warship, at Scotstoun on the Clyde, engineers from Somerset-based W & J Tod Limited (TODS) have delivered and completed the installation of the vital Bow Sonar Dome. After her Royal launch, by the HRH, The Countess of Wessex in February, Daring was moved to adjacent Number 2 Dry Dock to start her external fitting out phase, the first being the installation of the High Performance Sonar Bow Dome. The Dome, and keel fairing, had been designed over a twelve-month period for BAE Systems, and was produced in TODS workshops in Portland using an advanced composite manufacturing technique. On commenting on the installation of the Bow Sonar Dome, TODS Marine Divisional Director, Steve Burton said: “The high performance Dome, for the 1st of Class Type 45, is of the latest technology and is designed to meet a completely new range of operating parameters. The project was completed well within schedule, ready for the ship’s return to the water in late April.” |
