A dome from home in the arcticWestern Daily Press - “Business Week” - 23.10.2002Engineers from W & J Tod have successfully braved Arctic snow and possible threats from polar bears to erect two large radomes for a European weather station. Working with Norwegian contractors, they finished the job in 22 days - eight days ahead of schedule. The radomes are part of the EUMETSAT meteorological tracking station deep in the Arctic Circle at Svalbard, Spitzbergen. The double curved, composite material panels for the domes, specially tuned to accept satellite signals, were manufactured at Tods factory in Crewkerne, Somerset. “Two days of snow prevented the project from being completed even earlier.” said Tods project manager Bryan Harvey. Tods supplies similar radome technology to many of the world’s leading civil airports as well as more than 20 of the world’s navies. |
