AGUSTAWESTLAND COMMIT TO TODS ON WILDCAT

An initial production contract, valued at around £4million, has been awarded to Tods Aerospace for the manufacture of 140 different items of composite airframe components for the AgustaWestland AW159 helicopter. The order covering the first production batch in the Wildcat programme includes hi-spec cockpit and cabin doors, exhaust fairings and sub-frame products. Tods have designed 40 of the airframe components and structures.

The diverse product development is a direct result of an innovative ‘digital’ design engineering programme rolled-out in partnership with AgustaWestland, and for the first time utilises secure on-line exchange of design concepts between the two companies. This has allowed for time-saving progress throughout the project, from rapid prototyping through to production and the delivery timetable. The digital design technique improves the accuracy of assembly, reduces non-recurring costs, and eliminates time consuming production of traditional engineering drawings.

Simon Finch, CEO Tods Aerospace says: “Tods have been totally involved with the Wildcat programme from the outset. Our particular expertise with regard to composite material engineering and production has allowed us to design and have input into over forty of the airframe’s weight-efficient components, which will enhance the helicopter’s operational requirements”
